The Academies Financial Handbook requires that “all academy trusts must have a programme of internal scrutiny to provide independent assurance to the board that its financial and others controls, and risk management procedures, are operating effectively.”
This service provides a robust independent review of financial systems, controls, transactions and risks to the academy trust. The scope and focus of the audit is determined by the board of trustees enabling them to retain control but with the reassurance of guidance and expertise from an experienced professional.
The audit is designed to assess whether trust policies and procedures are being followed and where weaknesses are identified to offer best practice advice to improve controls. The audit will include questioning, review of documentation and transactional testing depending on the area being tested.
After each internal audit visit you will receive a full report detailing the checks undertaken, findings and clear proportionate recommendations. The recommendations will also be produced as a separate editable action plan to facilitate implementation and reporting to trustees and local governing bodies.
An initial meeting is offered to understand the structure of your trust, any known issues and potential risks and to agree priority areas for review.
Potential areas for review include:
- Governance and administration
- Financial planning and monitoring
- Purchasing
- Payroll
- Income and debtors
- Bank and cash
- Fixed assets
- VAT
- Data security (GDPR health check).
